Agree. And that is very unfortunate. But to be explicit, it is not one party gone extremist, as members of the other party like to claim. It is both. Why do you suppose that is the case?

I tend to blame the primary system, which I originally favored. Back when the party bosses picked the candidates in the proverbial smoke-filled rooms, the main concern was electability. That meant leaning toward the center, to appeal to independent and crossover voters. Primaries are dominated by the extreme wings of each party, so you get extreme candidates.

No they are not. They are more subtle about it, in order to give the appearance of neutrality, which is probably more dangerous.
