ehhh no I don't think it's that simple. Considering Ohio State seems to be having trouble with attendance, it takes more than just winning (yea they're trying to fill 102,000 seats compared to our 40,000). Their Rutgers game last year only drew 93k and they're issuing mini-plans for the first time in memorable history.

Even Bama saw a slight attendance decline in 2018. Saban was in the media last year, irate that Bama students weren't showing up for games.

That doesn't surprise me because a lot of schools schedule games against teams that have the appeal of dryer lint.

I'll wager the bulk of the drop in attendance was for the games against dogsh1t opponents. Games against legit rivals probably didn't drop off at all.....

The big boys need to schedule more games against legit teams to keep the attendance numbers where they need to be.

Meh- OSU still had the 2nd best attendance figures in the country last year (behind Alabama). It does us no good to compare ourselves to an Ohio State, Michigan Alabama, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M Georgia, Florida or Clemson. Those guys are attendance juggernauts with 80K+ each week, who outshine even the middle tier of the power five like Iowa (68K), Virginia Tech (59K), West Virginia (58K), Texas Tech (56K) or an Iowa State (56K). What we need to do is to improve ourselves to get us to be closer to max attendance (announced 40K), which would put us in the ballpark with UCF (44K) and further separate us from Houston (29K), Fresno State (31K), San Diego State (31K) and Boise (33K). * our attendance was 30K last year.

Simply scheduling "better" isn't the answer nor is it realistic TBH. We only have 4 OOC games and regional schools that would draw big crowds like Ohio State, Louisville, WVU, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame aren't coming to Nippert. Its just the way it is. We are very fortunate to have Nebraska, Indiana and Pitt coming to campus in the within the next 5 years. With the way things are going with P5 demanding 2 for 1s, I don't know how likely we'll get those type of games going forward.

This is an excellent analysis that demonstrates it's not just P5 or G5. The P5 has this elite tier, a large middle tier that draws far fewer fans and a few dregs. Of course it's easier to fill a stadium, even for middle and lower tiers when you have home dates with schools such as Alabama, Georgia, Texas or Michigan on a regular basis too.

Given Nippert's capacity, the real mark of UC's success will be selling out the season before it begins. That should be the goal and given the trajectory of the past decade plus, it's not unrealistic. Otherwise, UC will continue to report attendance that is "thirtysomething" thousand. It's the unreliability of walk up ticket sales--those occasional fans who decide not to attend a particular game because of rain, snow, heat, cold, family activities or just a cold beer and a hot pizza in the comfy chair at home. Season ticket holders are invested. If they decide not to show up, the revenue is still in the coffers and UC can choose to report tickets sold, not seats occupied.
