Except it's a lose-lose for their football program. They essentially become another UMass in football. If they decide to keep FBS football.

I understand their decision to go with the Big East such as playing close, traditional rivals in basketball. This move, however, makes zero sense for football. It essentially waves the white flag on football forever (or at least until the next round of major shakeups, assuming UConn is even able to get in on that).

I think the thing that it absolutely does is make it where if Big 12 is gutted, and they do a new best of conference with the carcas of the Big 12, UConn has absolutely no chance of getting in on that at all.
