I don't know that any state has two flagship schools, but many have two major comprehensive universities atop their systems. I heard on pretty good authority that after UC became a full member of the state system the idea was floated that the name should be changed to Ohio Tech. My initial reaction was negative, however Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech are highly respected and are thriving as the "other" major public university in their respective states.

While vacationing the past couple of weeks we had the opportunity to get a look at some campuses west of here--Mizzou, Iowa, and Colorado State specifically. UC's campus is now pretty special and quite unique; academic/research reputation is P5 ready, and football and basketball are flourishing. Cincinnati is a recognized brand now in college sports and if, going forward, someone suggested the city name was the only barrier, I'd be surprised. If it really stopped the Big 12 from taking Louisville, that would be consistent with that conference's string of poor decisions beginning with driving big brands CO, MO, Texas A&M and Arkansas away.

I think Arkansas was SWC to SEC...don't think they were ever B12.

Good catch--thanks for the correction regarding Arkansas exiting the Southwest before the merger with the Big 8 to form the B12. Still, the narrative holds- flagship universities in close proximity to fellow conference members, leaving their peer group for greener pastures. I've always heard Texas runs the show in the B12 and that has driven great schools from their natural geographic rivals.

Could they get Nebraska back?

The move to the B10 has been rough for their football program, but the money is too good to walk away from, I expect.
