The Ace of the Seahawk pitching staff, Gesell enters his 2nd season as the Friday starter, a role he was quite comfortable in last spring. Luke made a CAA-leading 16 starts, compiling a 5-5 record, 3.59 ERA, and 72 K's in 92.2 innings of work. Opposing batters hit just .221 against him.

Gesell's ascension to the Friday role was far from predestined. As a freshman, he made 4 starts but struggled to the tune of a 6.41 ERA on the season. As a sophomore, he was relegated to relief duty, but acquitted himself nicely in his 21 appearances. He posted a 3.37 ERA in that role, striking out 30 in 34.2 innings. His move to the starting rotation as a junior then tripled his workload; his 92 and 2/3 innings ranked 2nd in the Conference.

At the 2019 CAA Tournament, Gesell went above and beyond the call of duty. After pitching just 4 days prior against Northeastern, Gesell was used out of the bullpen for the only time all season in the CAA Championship game against Elon. Luke tossed 3 shutout innings to help secure the Hawks the Conference title. More clutch efforts in 2020 would thus not be surprising at all out of Gesell.
