Double elimination format.

Win and advance in Winners Bracket, lose drop to Losers Bracket.

Win in Losers Bracket, keep advancing. Lose in Losers Bracket, season over.

If NIU beats the Miami/Ohio winner, they advance to meet the loser of the Balls/Central game. Win that, advance to Championship Game (in essence at a 0-1 series deficit), so that a loss (any loss puts NIU at 2) and it's season over and the winner becomes Champ going undefeated in Tourney. But if NIU wins that first game (in essence, tying the series so both teams now have 1 loss) there would be a Game 2 and the winner of that game is crowned Champion.

HuskieDave said it more succinctly. But yeah, NIU can still win the Tournament Championship.
