Social media comment threads and memes have replaced newspapers. 24/7 cable news channel "pundits" have replaced (nearly) non-partisan news journalists.

And we can see it in both major parties. The GOP with the rise of the alt-right and Trumpism. And on the left, Bernie and now AOC shot to socialist rock star status. Moderates be damned.

Slogans. Fist-waving rants. Simpleton solutions to complex issues. Populism. My way or the highway. Demonize 'other' demographics. Identity politics on steroids. Rile up the crowd.

Barack Obama was a good president, and John McCain would've been a good one too. See, that statement in itself will get you more vilified with each passing year. Can't say anything positive about the Other. Biden is blasted for saying something nice about a Republican colleague. "RINO" Jeff Flake chased out of office for questioning Trump. We're running toward ideologically pure corners now.
