but, damn... this is one of the more baffling exchanges I have ever seen on the Quad.

Since you are baffled, I will explain:

It appears that Lad is castigating me for a post made by Numbers. Did you miss that too?

I'm baffled that you are intimating that somebody here is defending the right to spell people's names "any damn way they want."

I'm baffled that you took my misspelling as a sign of American arrogance and disrespect as opposed to an honest error that I left uncorrected for the reasons I previously put forward.

If I got somebody's name wrong, I would just say "excuse me, sorry" and learnfrom my mistake. Your excuses make sense for how the misspelling happened in the first place, but not for anything esle. I mentioned my brother-in-laws name. Originally I thought it was Vasquez, but upon learning I was wrong, immediately changedto the correct spelling. Of course, by then we were on a first name basis.

Re: the bolded, funnily enough that's exactly what I did. I'm sorry that I didn't correct the misspelling immediately however I simply didn't have the free time to catch it in the 1 1/2 hours between my posting it and then #'s making it an issue. But good for you for learning how to spell your BIL's name correctly because those two situations are exactly the same.

Anyway, here's what I typed:

"I'm sorry that I misspelled her name. I sometimes post quickly from my phone and syntax/spelling errors can happen. Sometimes I edit them if I'm in front of a laptop but it's sometimes not convenient to do so from the mobile. I actually do a quick google search on names usually but not if I'm on a mobile and in a rush.

I agree that people's names should be respected in general and being married to somebody with a "not-white" last name I have clear understanding of this issue."

Perhaps with the bolded you are referring to the first part of my post:

"In general this post is quite over-the-top IMO. Americans have the reputation abroad of being arrogant because I didn't spellcheck something that 8 people read on the Rice Quad? This tut-tutting is really quite something."

IDK, OO... if I saw somebody misspell somebody's name on this forum I would simply let it go as long as I understood the person to which they were referring. I certainly wouldn't give them a sniffly, condescending lecture about it.

I mean... I've made like 5500 posts on here. Do you remember me misspelling anybody's name before? Is it like I have a history of misspelling names? Like I make it a habit of ignoring how people spell their names?

What is hilarious is that you like to accuse me of somehow being obsessed with you. And yet here you are jumping in with these frankly insane accusations when I misspell a name likely as I was voice-to-texting from a long red light or some such. Your exaggerated reaction speaks volumes about your need to nitpick and find fault where there is none. The good news is that it's clear that you can hold off on throwing out accusations about other people being obsessed.

So I guess have a good night. Oh also ... it's spelled "else".

Well, go back to my original entry(#3147) in the name spelling discussion, which was generic, but which triggered a response from you (#3149) toward me which has continued since then with you defending yourself from a nonexistent attack and making excuses for it.

You took my generic statement as being about you. Tried my best to make a generic statement and you still took it personally - perhaps because it was from me?

Americans do have a reputation for being self-centered and arrogant. They will often make a hash of people's names and fail to learn even the most rudimentary of manners. This is one reason I was successful in my career - I didn't come off as a "gringo". My competition often did.

Thanks for the correcting of my spelling(typing?). Isn't this the type of grammar correction you and Lad were high-fiving over in posts 3145-46? At least it was not somebody's name. But I have the same excuses you have been giving the last coupled of days - I was busy, I didn't have time, I, I, I. Pick your favorite.
