Moore v Harper

coming up on Dec 7th...

Heh.... Pearl Harbor Day.....

I find the end of that article a bit ironic, given how grossly they mischaracterize the situation in North Carolina, the state the suit comes from. The NR says:

“ The alarmism around Moore v. Harper comes from liberals who cherry-pick their grievances in states whose constituents favor Republicans and selectively use liberal activist state courts to give Democrats advantages they cannot get democratically.”

NC went to Trump in 2020 by 1.3% of the vote. Tillis ® won by 1.8%. Cooper (governor, D) won by 4.5%.

So clearly, not a deep red state across the board. But in the same election, only 5 of 13 House seats went D. At the state level, Reps won Senate seats 28-22 and House 69-51.

North Carolina does look like a picture perfect example of a fairly purple state being gerrymandered into a much more partisan state than it actually is.

I do wonder how, in a state like NC that doesn’t reportedly have a law against gerrymandering, a situation is addressed where gerrymandering is, unquestionably, keeping peoples’ votes from counting in House and local races. Say in an instance where the gerrymandering literally keeps any person from the minority party from winning a seat because the districts are cracked.

I think Lad knows that both Republicans and Democrats gerrymander wherever they can. Maryland is a good example.

Here is a list of the most gerrymandered districts

here's another

WashPO!!!!!

"With average gerrymander scores of about 88 out of a possible 100, Maryland and North Carolina are home to some of the ugliest districts in the nation among states with at least three Congressional districts. In fact, North Carolina is home to three out of the top 10 most-gerrymandered districts in the country. Maryland is proof that gerrymandering isn't just a Republican pastime, as the state's Democrats redrew those boundaries in 2012. The standout in that state is the 3rd Congressional district, which is the nation's second-most gerrymandered and home to Democratic congressman John Sarbanes."

I am all for drawing up less gerrymandered districts, IF it applies equally to both parties nationally. The way to do this that is most proposed is an "independent" commission. But who appoints the "independent" commissioners? Partisan politicians.

The term gerrymander appeared in 1812, long before the Republican Party even existed.

Im in the seat that the districts are determined by the legislature, per the Constitution. And that political affiliation is not a protected class.

And I am amazingly amused at the 'oh the partisan gerrymander is so bad in NC' -- my response is tough ****. Win some more elections.

That was the response of the Democrats to Republicans all across the South until the late 80's and early 90's. Now that it shifted, the flipping sob stories of pathos and mournful violins of inequity get the playtime.

Sob stories and mournful violins of inequity being the Democrat theme for 40 years. Oh, and I forgot, when it is especially important to highlight the mournful violins of inequity, got to get those knees down at the national anthem.
