Actually it doesn't. If qualified candidates are getting rejected out of hand because of the school name on the diploma, that's objectively stupid.

If the school is known for certain practices that you disagree with, the school name gives a reasonable insight as to which practices and attitudes the graduate supports.

One of the schools you named is Texas A&M. Texas A&M grads are all over the socioeconomic, race, religion, and political spectrum. I'd be an idiot to assume anything about their practices and attitudes.

Liberty? Liberty is not an engineering school, so I'd doubt their qualifications for my line of work. Beyond that, what do I care? Same for ORU.

As for others, you don't have to be Catholic to go to Notre Dame, and you don't have to be Baptist to go to HBU...

I find your point of view on this issue archaic. I'm sorry, but there's no better way of putting it.

Don't be sorry. I value your opinion, even when it is wrong. We are here to discuss, not to teach.

A$M has a reputation as a very conservative school, and Liberty/ORU/BYU/etc have reputations as fundamentally religious schools, and fundamentalism is usually connected to conservatism.

Other schools have liberal reputations.

So if you want a conservative for your opening, and not a liberal, perhaps hire the guy from Liberty and not the one from Berkeley. If course, if you want somebody woke, probably the reverse would work better.

a) I don't care if they're "liberal" or "conservative". One of the benefits of what I do for a living, I guess.
b) I value my observations over anecdotes. My own experience of graduates of various schools is that there's no strong correlation between the school's reputation - often, as in A&M's case, based on the school's distant past - and the individual's place on the spectrum.

Case in point: you realize Rice's reputation is "liberal" and "progressive". What conclusions should a stranger draw about you once he learns you attended Rice? What would you want him to assume about your politics and workplace behavior based on that?
