But it's not like they decide "time for an abortion" nor do they perform an abortion. Both of these would be up to the OB (which is why this is important and the idea that the patient's OB just sends them over to the hospital and doesn't have to concern themselves with an emergent abortion doesn't make any sense).
perfect example of you spinning 93...

I never suggested any of the above. What I suggested was, if the OB isn't available (for any of a number of reasons) or disagrees with what these other doctors do, they aren't going to 'do nothing' and just say 'well, the OB didn't answer so I'm off the hook while I watch this patient die'.

What do you think the ER doctor will do in that situation? Just go ahead and perform a surgical procedure that they aren't trained to do? Seriously? ER doctors don't perform abortions, Ham. Even when it is an emergent situation. They don't amputate legs. They don't perform cardiovascular surgery. This is not Grey's Anatomy.

Quote: It's not as if an OB can schedule surgery without the hospital on SOME level signing off on it.... hence my comments about 'location'.

But nobody really "signs off" on the specific patient. It's not like there is some sort of immediate review committee that examines the case. The OB or surgeon calls the OR and says "I have to schedule procedure XYZ and I need to go immediately as my patient is unstable." The OR then makes sure there is a team to do the case and has a room available. There is not a "So why do you want to do this surgery?".

Quote:No, in only an EMERGENCY situation would the ER actually perform the surgery themselves, but a) they ARE 'emergency' doctors, so its going to happen somewhere and b) they would certainly order the consult if they thought it was even remotely necessary... and if they think its potentially necessary and order the consult, and then the OB performs the procedure that the ER doc consulted them on, then they have cover.... unless you're suggesting conspiracy!!

NO TO THE BOLDED! The ER doctors don't do surgery, Ham. I mean... they may do a small variety of tiny "surgical procedures" like put in a chest tube or cut down to access a vein but they don't do abortions, they don't do amputations, they don't take out gall bladders even when the patient is critically ill. They don't do this!!!!!

You seem to have a fundamentally flawed idea of what ER doctors do if you think they perform these type of surgical procedures.
