RE: Rice Quad Supreme Court / Legal Decisions Thread
The NY voting law and California abortions are related in my mind.

I believe that Lad and 93 have good intentions here. I don't think either of them have the intention of letting a woman intentionally cause the death of their viable (by any legal definition) but unborn child and face no consequences as the California bills would allow... nor do I believe that they want non-citizens voting in federal elections. Because of this, and their belief that 'nobody' wants these things... they might tend to ignore what these bills specifically say... what they clearly allow... and instead they will listen to a 'salesman' for that agenda who will basically tell them to ignore the man behind the curtain... to ignore what the bill ACTUALLY says and instead listen to their interpretation of it.

Meanwhile, they already have their anecdotes prepared for why bills from the other side are 'wrong'... to the point where Lad knows (I suspect because he read it somewhere recently in an article about the issues with the Texas bill) the 'name' of a woman in Ireland for whom this was an issue.

Here are the facts.
Under Texas law, treatment of an Ectopic pregnancy is not clinically or thus legally an abortion, despite the fact that it does abort the child. That is already in the statute. The ICD code for Ectopic Pregnancy is O00 (Oh, Zero Zero). The ICD code for a complete abortion is O03.9 (oh, zero three point nine). If abortion is part of what you do, I suspect you better know the law and document it correctly. That's already the practice, just with the line drawn in a different spot. If you have a legal but later term abortion, you damn well better be documenting the date of conception.

Also, if the bleeding would cause the mother's life to be at risk as in the Ireland case, the abortion would still be allowed, even under Texas' newest and most restrictive law.

So... the most commonly articulated scenarios under which there would be problems with the Texas abortion law involve misinterpretations or misapplications of the law. Meanwhile, the most common scenarios under which there would be problems with the California abortion law or NY voting law are PROPER applications of the law.

The Texas law IMO is vastly too restrictive, but it will not result in the 'fears' of the left, other than people not being able to get abortions beyond a few weeks after conception. This is a matter of 'where the lines are drawn'. Both the Cali and NY laws eliminate the lines completely.
