For a guy who was an assistant as long as he was before getting his first gig, I think you know this answer. It is all about risk and acceptable risk. This type of shot at improvement is too risky, because if it fails and he is out of a job, when will the next one come calling? Most are willing to fall on their own sword, because it meant doing things their way. Taking a big chance like that and it costing you your job wont sit well, since you would have fallen on the sword but it wasn't fully your idea.
