A Boca Bowl loss or win does little to nothing for your program if its 21-20. No one really notices that. But getting blown out, that gets peoples attention more. Bad attention. Also, a string of bowl losses starts to become extraordinary. Add to that string that they were blow outs and it becomes a story.

Yes this sums up bowls about right. NIU has now burned up all its reputation gained from 2000 to 2012 , I fear starting next season we will.see a Huskies closer to the 1990s than the 2000s. And there is not a damn thing we do about it with Carey here 3 more years

Sounds like what the Carey haters said all season ... CMU will blow us out, Ohio scored 50 points and will blow us out, Toledo will blow us out, Buffalo will blow us out, blah, blah, blah. but the man wins in the MAC, gets OOC wins, and just won a MAC Championship. Yes we have been bad in bowl games.

Keep rooting for him to fail, and keep being wrong with your projections.

And this from the guy who says bowl games are meaningless.

Sorry but non-hard core niu fans dont care that we won the mac championship. If we want to grow the fan base we need to win games that have eyeballs. That is p5 ooc games and bowl games.

I don’t think you grow the fan base much at all winning bowls like the Boca. You may lose a few you already had by getting blown out, but there just is not enough swagger in a Boca bowl win to make someone a new fan. Probably have to be a NY6 bowl. Or maybe a bowl win over a well known P5 team.

The best way to grow some new fans might be a marquee player. Someone who’s jersey is cool to wear. Someone you can market. Some people become fans of a player more so than of a team.

I am convinced growing the fan base at NIU is virtually impossible. This is not just a problem for NIU, but across college football.
- Students don’t come to games
- Too many millennials don’t want to get off their phone to attend live sports
- People don’t want to make the drive from the city/suburbs
- The fire Carey attitude among many casual fans

Despite losing the casual fans, the drop in ticket revenue is more than covered by increasing donations and premium ticket packages. Sean Frazier has been doing an excellent job keeping things going financially in a declining revenue environment, where the $hithole state of Illinois and declining university enrollment are significant factors in that equation and are ompletely out of Frazier’s control.

Get back to the Orange Bowl and win, that might get a few of the casual fans back for a season or two like it did in 2013, but that kind of success is not something that can be sustained.
