Golf. Davis Cup teams don't play their way into a championship.

Quote: College football will always be bastardized until it plugs that hole.

Thing is, College Football became the most popular sport in the college athletics portfolio without EVER doing that, so it's not obvious to everyone exactly why it is urgent to "plug that hole".

Based on that history, some will think it's a hole that is entirely invented, based on a theory that everything has to be done in the same way, at one level of generality, while ignoring how DIFFERENT are the SPECIFIC different ways to "play your way to a championship".

If there is only ONE right way, surely a majority of the different ways are being done wrong. And if there multiple ways are right in their own way, why does that boundary stretch to any of the various ways to play your way into a championship while not budging for the way that the most popular college sport has done things for the entire period of its growth in popularity?
