RE: The Athletic: college football power brokers pushing for 8 team playoff
If you are wondering why Delany and other conference commissioners are "considering" an 8-team playoff and NOT considering the role of MONEY, you're not asking the right question.

When the Power 5 gets auto-bids to an 8-team playoff, the CCGs become the de facto round of 16 playoff. And the conferences control 100% of that money. The Pac-12, for example, will get killed on their next TV deal because their CCGs have largely been irrelevant flops. But if the Utah/Washington winner makes the 8-team playoff, now that game actually means something for the national picture.

Even the G5 could see a CCG bump. UCF/Memphis obviously would have been a bigger ratings getter...but even Fresno State and Boise State might have gotten some attention.
