RE: The Athletic: college football power brokers pushing for 8 team playoff
In a 5-1-2 playoff there should be no special rules for independents. Make Notre Dame earn the at-large. No leapfrogging a higher ranked team on the grounds that they're Notre Dame.

What does everyone think about sites? If the semi final losers aren't going to play in NY6 bowls as consolation games then maybe the higher seeded teams shouldn't be hosts.

The Rose Bowl is never going to be okay with changing their date but maybe the others would be okay with moving to mid-December (when not hosting a semi-final) or you could seek out other bowl sites that might want to be cut in as semi-final sites: Las Vegas, LA (Rams Stadium), Orlando, Detroit, Houston, etc
