EDIT: IF your unit of analysis is the individual schools, top 8 makes some sense. But in a real sense, the unit of analysis is the conference. Which means autobids.

IMO, the unit of analysis is the schools, not conferences. The point of a playoff is to crown a national champion school, not a conference. Hence, no auto-bids.
