But just because you beat out members of your conference doesn't mean you proved anything in comparison to teams from other conferences. You didn't beat those teams out so you have no claim to say you proved you were better.

Look at every other playoff in NCAA. It's a mix of conference equitability/parity/representation through auto bids and competitive matchups through at-large bids. And of course being equitable and competitive are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

Win your conference go to the playoff. Don't win your conference but prove yourself otherwise, go to the playoff.

Right, but look at the mixture: In the hoops and baseball tournaments, the great bulk of power teams get into the tournament via the at-large route. The ACC might put 7 teams in the basketball or baseball tournament, though obviously only one of those is the conference champion.

In contrast, if we are talking about an 8-team playoff with auto-bids, that won't be possible. Most conferences will be limited to just their conference champ making the playoffs, at most there would be two or three at-large teams.

That's a mix the NCAA hoops and baseball tournaments themselves abandoned well over 40 years ago.

There's an NCAA rule that limits autobids to half the field in any of their tournaments.

Well if the NCAA is going to administer we can use the NCAA's rules. They have 24 playoff spots for 125 teams (actually 97 because Ivy, MEAC and SWAC do not participate).

Similar ratio when accounting for abstainers would be a 32 team playoff for FBS.
