Ruffin said that ECU was a destination job for him. Terry Holland hired him. Then Compher was given the AD position in 2013, he took the athletic budget from a surplus of $3 mm to being in the hole $3mm by 2017. He fired McNeill in 2015 after one down season which saw ECU lose their two-deep on the QB depth chart, Lincoln Riley, and Shane Carden and Justin Hardy to graduation. I'm not sure the information on why Ruffin was fired will ever come out, Compher said it was because he wanted ECU to be a championship program. Well, second year in the AAC and you fire a coach who went 8-4 and 10-2 in the previous two regular seasons because you want championship football? The entire tenure of Compher was strange, based on what i've read and searched for from the events of 2013 to 2017.

I thought that was odd too then to see them fall like they have. I liked Ruffin though.
