Freeman is still too green to be a DC for a first time coach. As bad as that OSU defense was this year, I could see Day going after someone who has a little higher pedigree rather than take a chance on someone unproven. He'd be putting a lot on the line, right off the bat. The OSU fanactics have no patience for someone to "grow" into the position. He needs to win right off the bat or they will be calling for his head.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you but... isn't Fickell a first time coach?

You aren't really considering that joke of a year at O$U as coaching experience, are you? He basically was just thrown in there. He didn't get to hire a staff of his own.
