Quote:Josh Whyle is injured and will miss several weeks, but the former La Salle High School standout should be able to play some football for the University of Cincinnati this season.

UC coach Luke Fickell, speaking after a night practice here Thursday at Camp Higher Ground, said that Whyle will undergo surgery for a clavicle (collarbone) injury suffered this week. Fickell said that Whyle will miss 4-to-6 weeks, but the coach is optimistic about recovery time. Whyle attended practice Thursday in street clothes, with his left arm in a sling.

"He'll still play this year," Fickell said.

True freshman Whyle is a tight end, listed at 6-foot-6 and 238 pounds on UC's preseason camp roster. Whyle was rated a three-star recruit by 247Sports.com and the No. 3 prospect among UC's highly-regarded 2018 recruiting class.

Whyle was named Ohio Division II first-team all-state and Greater Catholic League South first team last season, with 40 catches for 546 yards and six touchdowns. Whyle had more than 30 major college offers. Those included Auburn, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Whyle was ranked No. 19 nationally at his position by 247Sports last season, and also the No. 14 overall player in Ohio.

Whyle was not projected to be a starter entering the season, but he was taking occasional reps with the No. 1 offensive unit during practice. Whyle had two receptions in an intrasquad scrimmage last Saturday.

First Key CHG Injury

Yeah with the new rules (at least as I recall and understand them) we could get him back and play him in our final 4 games while still counting this a redshirt year which wouldn't be too bad of a deal at all for him and for UC.
