Travel expenses - all expenses - are a huge factor in D3. Revenue is non-existent.

But I'd wager to say that the cash outlay for D3 travel would probably be way less than the nominal cash subsidy that goes to the department currently. And scholarships aren't on the books anymore (though I'd count the savings as something closer to the out-of-pocket average that for students instead of the full freight room and board - that's the "lie" in subsidy that Rice provides the department). There would be some revenue, but more like a high school level instead of the D1 standards is expect to fill.

Plus, facilities would normally be downsized (though what's there currently is a sunk cost, so may not save much there, but more on future facilities), so maintenance costs could go down some. And D1 stipends would be off the table, too.

Kinda wonder why the Patterson was built where it is as in the future of d3, FB could return to the site of old Rice Stadium.
