I wasn't part of it and didn't know about it, but I can think of a bunch of reasons:
(1) The folks proposing the plan have a better relationship with Leebron than Karlgaard;
(2) The folks proposing the plan thought it would have more weight with Karlgaard if they had Leebron's support, rather than if it was just coming from some donors;
(3) For some reason, the folks proposing the plan were concerned that Karlgaard would be hostile to the plan and would not, independently, give it fair consideration;
(4) The folks proposing the plan wanted Leebron's input before taking it to Karlgaard.

Probably more possibilities, but that is what I came up with off the top of my head.
