The team was/is in undeniable decline and game attendance has plummeted. His contract expiration was on the horizon and he had not yet been approached about an extension. He's 80+ years old (ugly truth, but it has to factor into the thinking). The writing was on the wall as to what the AD wanted to do -- even without JK bringing it up. That's what I mean by self awareness -- knowing when it's time. JK tried to do it the gentle way (contract expiration) without having to fire him mid-contract. I think a case could have been made last summer to terminate, but doing so on the heels of the improbable CUSA tournament win would have been bad optics -- although that's not to say it would have been the wrong decision.

Talk about bad optics, how about not extending a contract for a coach whose teams had never before finished below .500?? Whose teams are on a streak of 23 years in the regionals and conference champions?? The discussion should have happened after the season was over and if they continued their downturn a farewell season should have been granted. It was shamefully handled and embarrassing to have everyone else celebrating Wayne’s career while we ignored him.
