As many have said, I think the ideal situation would be for someone like Saarloos to come in with Lance as an assistant coach, but do we know if he would be willing to take that sort of a "demotion"? It seems like he must be lobbying for the job, as I don't know why 50+ former players would go out of their way to try and get him hired.

1. Lance has been aggressively lobbying for the job-- personally reaching out to former players and influential alums/donors. Nothing wrong with that.

2. From what I've heard, Lance would seriously consider an Assistant (or volunteer) coaching job under Saarloos, as they're good friends from their Astros years together. And Lance recognizes that lack of D-1 coaching experience is the shortcoming of his resume.

At this point, I do think the search comes down to Saarloos or Berkman. The combo would be a grand slam, and would allow JK to satisfy almost all constituents (save for those who hold Lance's public LGBT stance against him). The question is whether Joe is prepared to ante up the money necessary to land Saarloos, especially given the attractiveness of "saving" $600,000+ if Lance, as some of suggested, is willing to take the job for free.
