As long as football gets back to .500 and an every 4 year birth in the Fort Worth bowl we’ll be able to say we’re getting there. Hire the guy with the lowest salary.

That was the 'other side of the coin' I was speaking of. Although I don't AT ALL agree with throwing baseball to the wind, I think the reason we're talking about Berkman is just this, at least initially.

I think what Walt said is that it's a bad idea for a head coach with no collegiate experience to hire a pitching coach with none. That would apply to Lance but obviously not to Wayne.

Obviously, it is not possible for every pitching coach hired to be someone with collegiate pitching coach experience, or in a generation there would be no more pitching coaches. But there is a difference between an experienced coach versus an inexperienced coach when it comes to hiring an inexperienced assistant.

Pettitte will be the volunteer coach

And as I understand it, Berkman will similarly be at least 'cheap'... which leaves a whole lot of financial room to hire TWO people like Pope... or even more experienced... and still leave some room to shift to football without 'giving up' on baseball.

THAT is what makes it remotely viable. If Berkman and Pettit take Wayne type money right off the bat, then it's a HUGE risk to take IMO... not for baseball, but for the department
