(Someone should be along shortly to explain how that makes sense--I'm not sure why the non-scholarship competitive parkour team can't just be non-scholarship at D1 instead of D2.)

I can't work out any technical reason why compliance with D1 requirements would be easier if you cut sports, so if that is a trend, I expect it would be because of the extra cost of being competitive in either BBall (for Olympic Sports schools) or in BBall and FCS Football (for FCS schools).

Let me look around for some receipts. UC San Diego just made it to the Big West. Nothing about cuts there. Link

WAC is calling up Cal Baptist. I actually can't find any newspaper articles about it.

As for North Alabama, I've got an SBNation saying they need to add sports. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/9059...-a-mistake

So maybe I'm half-remembering schools that had to kill football to go Division I?

Division 2 does not require as many overall sports as Division 1 does ... 5/5 or 4/6 M/W in Division 2, versus 7/7 or 6/8 M/W in Division 1. But there are 2/2 team sports required for each, so I can imagine a Division 2 school that needs to bulk up its number of sports and has more than two men or women's team sports cutting a team sport it hasn't been very successful in to fund establishment of more individual sports.

I have found one reason why some specific sports might be cut when moving to Div1: other than football and BBall, Div2 has no minimum scheduling requirements for sports, so it is possible to imagine a sport that a school cannot afford to run at the minimum required Div1 schedule getting cut.

But since Div1 has more sports required, it seems like there would be more likely to be shuffling around of the sports offerings rather than an overall trend to cutting down on sports to step up to Div1.
