SUNY Brockport and SUNY Genesee joining Empire 8

Sure seems like a strange move. Why leave the SUNYAC? The Empire 8 just lost a member when Medaille closed and small private colleges like those in the Empire 8 should be concerned about their future with the Excelsior scholarship.

To me it makes a lot of sense on the Empire's 8 part. Not sure about Brockport or Geneso though. Utica is likely moving to the NE-10 in D2 for all sports except ice hockey once they find a conference for hockey in D1.

This keeps the Empire 8 at ten schools if/when Utica leave so they are thinking ahead.

A quick followup. In addition to joining the Empire 8, Brockport and Geneseo will depart SUNYAC Hockey and join the UCHC after this season.

What's the reasoning for leaving the SUNYAC?
From a hockey POV, I'm guessing once everything else left the SUNYAC, they had to go somewhere else. The UCHC is where most of the E8 schools play hockey so it was an ideal landing spot. As far as everything else, I'm guessing travel and the ability to play local rivals more often.
