It appears that Division II is becoming increasingly similar to the NAIA, which could be the reason why schools in Division II are leaving.

In my view, this could be a good thing. Many people have considered D2 to be pointless. "All of the expense, none of the glory" of D1. Thats a but of hyperbole but its not that far from the truth. Schools that can go D1 SHOULD go D1.

As D2 continues to exercise its new self determination, it will continue to find new purpose and appeal. Rules that make sense for elite athletes previously imposed on d2 by d1 will be eliminated. Maybe they'll even implement a genuine 64 team national tournament!
That's a valid observation. I'm not familiar with how schools in the West, particularly in California, operate with part-time coaches at private schools. In California, the minimum FTE for exempt employees is $64,480.00, so it seems unlikely that head coaches are being paid hourly wages since $64k is a significant amount for most of the country but probably not for a family in CA. Additionally, the travel required for D2 on the West Coast appears to be quite extensive.
