The Bowl game was a disaster. I still haven't had the stomach to watch all of it. Still, it shouldn't define the season. We need to avoid bad performances (OU, App St) against solid teams. Still, the fact is we were playing a good team that was hot and pretty healthy with a patchwork oline, and one of the weakest sets of LBs in the post season. Seriously, our best inside LB was a 5-10 guy with average speed and tackling skills who sometimes had the knack for a big play. We were filling our LB rotation w a glorified under sized walk on who could tackle but not much else, a guy who struggles to tackle and an inexperienced athletic kid who makes a few plays and lots of mistakes. Every one else was out hurt or a low profile recruit freshman. Meanwhile, we had a dline that was at best average and only had 1 disruptive player who was (unfairly, imo) ineligible for the first half due to a questionable targeting call in the MACC. Other than a couple inspired quarters vs Miami, Fla and focused efforts against some average MAC teams we couldn't really stop anyone with a run game. The point about recruiting is we went out and loaded the class with Dlinemen, LBs, and O-linemen including a key grad trans, and a few jucos who can all help right away because it was obvious to the staff thats where we are weak. I don't fully agree with the year recruiting based turnaround argument, because most frosh and some jucos need a year (or more for many frosh) to become playmakers, but clearly this class was a reaction to the losses of the last 2 years and en emphasis on getting better in the box.
