RE: UCF claims a National Championship. Why are they doing it?
(01-08-2018 11:03 AM)DogTracks Wrote: The membership of FBS, driven by the P5, has basically punted on having an actual sanctioned NCAA championship in football, outsourcing it to what amounts to the football NIT. (Note that the NIT is older than the NCAA basketball tournament and for at least the first few years of the NCAAs, was still of higher stature). They do this because it keeps the money in their hands and away from the NCAA collectively and allows them to basically ignore having to give the full membership of FBS actual access to a post-season.
In the absence of an actual, official NCAA national champion (with an NCAA trophy and everything) what exists remains nothing more than the muscled up version of the old, correctly identified, "mythical national champion."
The P5, with their TV and bowl committee buddies have, over the last 20 years created increasingly elaborate versions of the same thing there has always been- pretend championships.
So if UCF, or anyone else wants, I say go ahead and declare it.
The best part of this is the attention it is getting. It is getting into the minds of people that the expansion needs to happen. Haven't heard this much talk of it in a while
