CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina is launching a roughly $6 million project to replace bleachers with individual seats throughout much of Kenan Stadium, reducing its capacity by about 20 percent.

The school announced the plan Monday. The 22-inch seats with arm rests will replace bleachers in upper and lower levels except for student sections. UNC will add a facility improvement fee of $6 to each ticket to pay for the change and other future improvements to Kenan, the Tar Heels' on-campus home since 1927.

The school had replaced two bleacher sections with blue seats last year as a trial run and said fan feedback was "overwhelmingly positive."

The change will reduce Kenan Stadium's capacity from 63,000 to about 51,000. The school averaged about 50,100 in reported attendance for seven home games in 2017.

I like the idea of paying more for something if I know what it is, also I dont mind donating more if I know what exactly it is going towards. This is a concept that ODU doesnt seem to grasp. If ODAF had a capital campaign for only the stadium, I think ODU fans would pretty quickly raise a good chunk of money. But ODU and ODAF want to control what the money goes towards. The fans however will put money towards something they really want.

+1. They should have reached out a year or two ago. All we can hope is that they are planning for a $60-70million stadium at the same time they are planning the $55 million version. That way if the money comes in once they get around to raising funds specifically for it, that money can be used in phase 1. If they botch this, so many people are going to be disgruntled it would almost certainly have ramifications toward raising money for phase 2, which they should actually be raising money for now.

I would love to see some sort of chart that shows what we can build for $55 million, $60 million, $65 million & $70 million. Then show a running tally of how much money we have at the current time. Let the supporters know how much we need to give and to what end. People might get excited if we started at $55 million, and then quickly got up to say $59 million. And if the next stage of stadium quality happens at $60 million, I feel confident Monarch Nation would step up and push it over the hump at each level.
