It's one of the reasons why I use the term "Progressive". Looking only at our more recent history, I believe the break between the New Deal Liberal (which is when I think the definition for liberal was redefined) and the Progressives occurred sometime around the LBJ administration when the Great Society programs were enacted. That is when identity politics started to become the primary strategy of the Dem party. Back then the progressives were a minority, and it wasn't until the combination of automation plus exporting mfg jobs overseas and to NAFTA countries that the Dems truly moved away from the modern liberal who embraced unions to progressives who embraced identity politics.
