Aztec Game Thoughts
* Huff has NFL skills. He has the speed and power to control a game. Inexplicable why he hasn't been utilized to his fullest potential
* Santacaterina shows promise, but his poor throwing mechanics will be a hindrance to his development
* This might be the best defense NIU has put on the gridiron in a decade. We are well coached and we have recruited well (seemingly). I mentioned "might" because it is still early and it remains to be seen how our defensive staff reacts to the adjustments opposing offenses make as more tape on our scheming becomes available
* Handing down a mere one game suspension is embarrassing to our program. The dirty play was caught vividly on camera on a nationally televised game. There is a big difference between a cheap shot and a dirty play. A cheap shot gets you a one game suspension; a dirty play should merit much more. You don't mess with someone's eyes.
* To illustrate my point, Danny Trevathan got two games from the NFL. To me, that was a classic example of a cheap shot. I didn't find that nearly as egregious as what our kid did to Penny.
* Our special teams are awful and they will cost this team victories if they are not shored up. Is there not a kid on this roster that can kick a football all the way to the end zone? He doesn't have to have pinpoint accuracy - just kick it a long way. There has to be someone
* We are strong and athletic on the line of scrimmage. I don't feel as if this Huskie team would be overmatched physically by many teams. Kudos to our strength and conditioning coaches
* Love the old school white uniforms. I sort of liked the numbers on the helmets, however I would prefer to see the "NIU" for branding purposes, particularly when it is a nationally televised game against a ranked opponent
* The camera caught Coach Carey laying into Santacaterina after his untimely interception at the end of the game. What kind of a man lashes out at his nineteen year old inexperienced quarterback after the kid makes an ill-advised throw? There is a time and place to get on a kid, but it is NOT in heat of moment when the young man is devastated because he feels like he just let down his entire team. There was a possibility that NIU might need Santacaterina to come back on the field and win the game. Breaking his spirit isn't going to do a bit of good. Coach Carey is a punk, he'll always be a punk, and this program needs to be rid of him
