They could and would lose their tax exempt status. And no university no matter how big or how small could afford to run while paying taxes on everything, they just couldn't.

Not so fast. There are ways to get around that. One is unified payment of players. One price per athlete. They would have to design some sort of draft or area specific recruitment range to avoid the problem of an Alabama getting every kid they want. They would also have to have their own governing body with teeth such as the NFL has. They could figure out how and I guarantee they are working on it now somewhere.
You have to think about the money available to these programs. It is mind boggling and they are very greedy. They want as much as they can get. Damned everyone else.
