Here is my take away:

The players are victims because they are being put at risk of losing their eligibility due to this process representing NCAA violations. I guess the claim is that the players are naive in this whole process. Color me skeptical, but ok.

The universities are victims because this practice is putting their programs at risk due to NCAA violations and could result in loss of ability to participate in post season, fines, etc...

Lastly, a few years ago (either the Universities or NCAA) implemented a new process whereby the coaches and coaching staff have to sign an affidavit attesting to the fact that they are not aware of any NCAA violations within the program. I see this as similar to the Sarbanes-Oxley regulations in the corporate world where the officers essentially have to attest to the accuracy of the books. i.e. "You are in charge, it is your responsibility to know what is going on". The coaches are going to get nailed because they signed these affidavits while knowing there were problems.

I guess I can see how this behavior could harm the player and universities so I can see how you get to fraud/conspiracy charges, so yeah, this could/will get bad.

If this marks the beginning of law enforcement's ability to apply these types of laws to anyone that pays a player/handler in order to influence a recruit's decision of where to attend school (hello boosters), and if those that participate in violating an NCAA rule can face legal charges now instead of just the school just facing NCAA violations, this is a game changer for athletics.

tell me you only mentioned sarbanes-oxley in jest.......please......

what a joke that one was/is......that's too easy to circumnavigate......

Only mentioned it because it sounded similar in concept to SOX since it sounds like they are asking the coaches to sign an affidavit. I had never heard of this before I listened to the ESPN report, which is why I mentioned it. Not trying to speak to the effectiveness of SOX in the corporate world.
