Just bc we have a scholarship doesnt mean we are forced to use it.

But why wouldn't you want too, it's free lottery ticket. It's not like you have to bring the guy back the next year, and if you are worried about hurting feelings just sign a grad transfer who will be gone anyway. There are unexpected finds all the time. Sitting on it is about the worst of all the options.

Bc sometimes you have guys like Oliver fall into your lap. We do not typically pull scholarships since it's a bad look unless the players are getting into legal trouble/failing drug tests. If you take a borderline kid or go below your standards, you are stuck with a sholly you didn't really need. You also have more scholarships available than you have spots for playing time for the most part.

So taking a developmental kid would be fine but taking on players just to fill them up isnt' really smart.

It seems like a wasted bite at the apple to me to just sit on it. Really the only value in keeping it open is a mid season transfer and those are pretty rare, or that you even want to waste about a quarter to third of a potiental season with them sitting out about 8 or 10 games.

Players could always be offered with the understanding it's a one year deal. Players could be told they won't play much and encouraged to leave, many leave anyway with all the transfers today. Grad transfer option etc. I'd rather have something in that spot that has a chance to surprise than it just collected dust as an empty chair.

Mid season transfers are not very rare anymore. There were over 100 of them last year.
