It looks like we're not playing in the new arena after all. At least not this season.

“We explored the option of moving our men’s basketball games into the new Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, but determined that, at this time, staying in the UTRGV Fieldhouse is a better, more affordable option for our fans, and better for our athletics program as well,”

“We had some good discussions, and I think we’re still open to having further discussions with them,” Solis said. “Really, at the end of the day, we hope that we can get them to play some games at the Bert Ogden Arena with the ultimate goal of maybe having all of their games over at the arena.”

What I'm hearing here is "the arena's rent is too expensive and we're going to lose money on every game until our attendance improves."

I was looking forward to seeing the BOA at reasonable cost (no way I'm paying out what they're charging for music concerts). But other than that, this is good move at least for regular games, because an 80% empty arena is a bad vibe. I could see using it for specific games (like Oklahoma) that are likely to have a good turnout.

Anyway, it will be a fun to have Lon Kruger back in the Fieldhouse, to see a "real" team from 15 ft. away for $7, and to have the place packed and loud.
