That would seem like a strange lineup if made today, IMO.

It would be like putting together something like this today:

Bradley
St. Louis
Northern Illinois
Missouri State (w/ plans to start football)
Wichita State (w/ plans to start football)
Arkansas State
Louisiana Tech
Southern Miss
Charlotte
Old Dominion

wtf....

It was pretty logical really...Metro and Midwest conferences merged. Houston joining was the only oddity. Tulsa was also expected to join, but they got an unexpected invite to the WAC. ECU was snubbed at first but got in for football in 1997.
