Still an unreal identifier of talent and builds legitimate relationships with his players. I don't know if he can do it at VCU, but with what I'm seeing from his defense this year, I feel surer that he could've built something special at Rice.

Perhaps we're seeing that Pera could at Rice, too. The key will be if he is finally the hoops coach to get most or all players to stay here, develop and graduate with a degree. Will the new Rice Initiative help pay some dividends in basketball as in some other sports?

Saw this re: the transfers situation with a few interesting quotes from College Hoops Basketball Head Coach

Quote:“Once a player enters the portal,” Staples writes, “the player’s current school is under no obligation to keep that player on scholarship.” Meaning: Even if a player decides he wants to stay — or can’t find a school of his liking that’s willing to take him — his old spot mightn’t be waiting for him. The transfer protocol was established to give players more freedom, but freedom could come at a cost. As Staples illustrates, the protocol has already become a way for coaches to practice roster management. Believe it or not, that roster management could be more severe than was allowed under the former rules.

Quote:Head Coach Tom Crean recently said...that he was “the one who decided to keep these guys,” meaning those players left on campus after Mark Fox was fired. Crean has apologized for appearing to suggest that he should have run off some of those players...
