I think the reasoning behind this is that they want to make "ETSU" synonymous with the university. Kind of like how people don't refer to UCLA as University of California Los Angeles...they just call it UCLA. That is my guess.

One of the good things the new branding and logo have going for it is that now the university logo and the athletics logo are essentially the same. This makes it more likely to stick around for much longer. Since the time ETSU has done this, other universities have followed (not saying ETSU lead the way, just saying others are doing it). UT Knoxville no longer uses the old "UT" with the top of the T being the shape of the state. They now use the same power T logo as athletics except reverse colors. University of Oregon uses the simple "O" that athletics adopted.
