A sendoff

The Jimmy V Classic appears to be quickly gaining traction among the lake area’s top players, but it’s also becoming a sort of sendoff for them. It’s a chance for high school teammates to play together one last time and for rivals to share the ball with each other for a change.

Player connections, of course, go beyond the high school ranks, and many of those playing know each other from the AAU circuit as well.

“It was fun, but kind of sad at the end because I’ve played with these guys the last four years,” said North Meck guard Taj Middleton, who just signed with Navy. “I’m gonna look forward to see what they do in the future.”

As for Middleton’s future, he said that’s what he was thinking about when he chose the Naval Academy.

“I want to travel the world, too,” he said.

For the first time in awhile, Middleton played against longtime pal and high school teammate C.J. Bryce, who leaves for summer school at UNC Wilmington in three weeks.

“It was cool,” said Bryce. “I know he knows my moves, and I know his moves.”


Slam dunks

Bryce wowed the crowd with a series of impressive dunks, including one at the final horn of the boys’ game (Technically, it was just after the horn, but it resonated just the same).

Bryce also soared to the dunk contest victory after bouncing the ball off the glass and completing a windmill.


Hairston shines

Kenny Hairston has a quick first step, and the Davidson Day guard wasted little time setting the tone in an MVP performance in the boys’ game. Hairston scored four of his team’s first eight points, then scored 12 straight and 15 of the final 19 for Team BMW — the event’s primary sponsor was Hendrick Luxury Auto Mall Northlake — of the first half. He finished with a game-high 34 in the 110-80 win over Team Audi.

“I’m just blessed,” he said. “I love it so much.”

Hairston has signed with Limestone College. He said it was fun, as a point guard, to distribute to Hough’s Maye and North’s Bryce, who scored 26 and 22, respectively.

Pritchett and Lincoln Charter’s Amir Davis scored 15 each for Team Audi.
