I don’t really know what the answer is for baseball, since I’m not sure that Tony LaRussa or Bobby Cox or Joe Torre (to pick three random Hall of Fame managers) could overcome the disadvantage created by the merit scholarship system at places like Baylor and TCU. Maybe look at how Stanford gets around it, but I’m not sure we can replicate even that.
I think Bloomgren is the right guy to turn football around, but that’s going to take a couple of years. I’d like to think Pera can do it in basketball, but I think we will have a much better handle on that a year from now.
I think what many posters on here don’t realize is just how incredibly dysfunctional Rice athletics was for 40-50 years. I did bankruptcy work during much of that period, and it was the most dysfunctional organization I have been around. This sick cow is not going to get well overnight.
Some people on here have criticized the McKinsey report. But McKinsey told us exactly what to do. Make the commitment to be a leader in intercollegiate athletics, to show the way that it can be done both right and successfully. Either that or get out. A decade and a half later, we still haven't done either, or really made any significant strides toward either.
Sadly by not making that commitment, we have made strides to getting out. Neglect is the same as active destruction.

Yep. Pretty much.
