Look, regardless of wha we did on the field, our problem was that literally everything OFF the field was so screwed up that nobody wanted us. The WAC-16 made it pretty clear up front that we had to up our game in certain areas. We didn't.

If you weren't there, I don't know how to explain just how bad it was. If I told you, you wouldn't believe it. I've tried to put it in some perspective by saying that I spent 20 years doing bankruptcy and the Rice athletic department was the most screwed up organization I had ever been around.

If you had said in 1970, "We have 10,000 regular fans/customers. Let's see how fast we can drive them all away," you'd have ended up with something very much like how things were run.
