I'm not sure they should be drafting/allowing soldiers younger than 21 years of age. 18,19, even 20 years old is just too young IMO, as the science has evolved to show the average brain is now clearly understood not to be even fully developed until around 26 years old...coincidentally the purported average age of the WWII combat soldier. It seems reasonable to infer that part of our country's success in that war versus later ones was the increased average age of our combat soldiers.
