I bolded the lyrics for ya Stink. I was mowing today and listening to music and it made me think of you quoting those lyrics. People can laugh and chuckle but man at his base can always end up at the place in those lyrics.

Anyhoo it reminded me of this guy I used to work with. Long story so put those reading glasses on to the end of your nose amigo.

This was back when I worked in Maintenance as an Electronics Technician before I went over to the dark side of management. Most of our Maintenance department were former military. USPS has veteran's preference and the exams to become an ET were very stringent so a lot of of ex military could pass that exam due to military training.

But we had a lot of custodians in our Maintenance Dept too. Some of those guys were Army retirees that'd drive an hour south each way from Fort Knox Ky. One of these guys was from West By God Virginia.

Whenever a man meets a new man they usually take measure. "Could I take him if I had to". (At least that's what goes through my brain at some point). This guy was about my size. 5'11 and 185. But I saw a wiryness in him that gave me pause. He looked pretty hard. This was born out later when he got arrested for beating up a young guy over a fat chick. He was late 40's at the time. His initials were L.M.

We were sitting around talking about getting something for lunch and asked why he never joined in. He said his wife wouldn't let him carry any money. Dude had retirement from Army coming in and not bad check from USPS. We said "Come on man"

He coolly said "My wife knows if I have more than 20 dollars on me I'ma end up with a bottle of whiskey and a fat whore. (Don't ask me why fat....maybe cheaper). The way he said it though was like he had zero say in it. That it was an earthly property that could not be changed.

LM + $40 = whiskey + fat whore = possible jail time.

And it had happened. I was good friends with my Maintenance Manager and a couple times when LM wasn't around I'd ask where he was and he'd say "oh he got drunk this weekend in BG and ended up in jail". They always kept it on the downlow so he wouldn't lose his job over morality clauses built in. He was allowed to use his vacation days or LWOP whenever this happened.

We just laughed and laughed how he accepted his fate. That he had no say in it. That if he had some money he became some white trash automaton that had no control over what was happening next.

Another quick story. I don't know if you've ever read "Born Fighting" by Jim Webb. It chronicles how the white trash in this country have always done the fighting for the upper crust going back to every war we've been in. And that a disproportionate share of those hail from Appalachia. Fascinating read. Says they/we are the descendants of the Scots/Irish that have basically been fighting since their existence.

Anyhoo LM told me stories how every summer their extended clan would travel from West By God to visit family in Eastern Kentucky. I asked what they did when they got together. He said they'd fight and f**k. LOL. For real. He said when he was a kid all the dads would make all the cousins fight each other. This was their idea of fun.

As I said earlier. When I met LM I wasn't sure if I could've taken him if the need arose. I'd like to think I could've at least taken it to a draw. I wonder what dude is up to these days. I probably haven't seen or heard from him in almost 10 years. He eventually did lose his job over attendance and jail terms.

Good times.

I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate you sharing that....I've known many like LM....sometimes, it's been the mirror.....

before I pass, I MUST sit down with you and swap spit with stories.....it'd probably require a 1/2 gal. 03-wink

04-cheers

LOL. Why you think I told the story to you? Some of these youngsters on here wouldn't believe a guy in his 40's would be someone to be wary of. I guarantee you WKUYG can tell you about plenty of dudes like my boy LM. YG grew up on the west side of BG in what was basically the hood back then.

LM was just one of those guys that made my life more interesting for having met. I by no means would've traded places with him. He had some roguey in him too. Not a guy you'd let borrow your good tool set. Lol.

I knew you'd enjoy the stories, and like me, be able to picture that damn family reunion when those cousins were going to hook city to see who was the toughest of the clan.

I had another good friend that was retired army. He was Puerto Rican and had married a Korean when he was in. Said when they got to fighting they'd cuss each other in their own language and then cuss each other in English. He was a hood rat from San Juan. Rougher than a cobb.

Anyhoo, he told me that Koreans are hard as rocks. Said they have very little good land in a mountainous peninsula. Makes for a hard scrabble existence. Said that Korea was the West Virginia of Asia. Explains a whole lot when you watch Kim Jong Un's shenanigans if you see them in that context.

XACLY!

when I moved here at the age of 9 from StL, it was always punches tossed from day one simply b/c I was a 'yankee that talked funny' (that'd be any north of the free state of jones county in the 'burg) 03-wink

it took a 'neck from 10 miles south to move a month later to help me out in defense before they stopped (was usually having to combat more than one at the same time)......

ironically, he's now a preacher....

now I just punch inanimate objects (i.e. the keyboard) when the volcano 'erupts'....lol....

thanks for sharing all of that!
