Which freshmen will play this fall?
The coaches have said anywhere from 5 to 8 from this class could play this fall.

-Ken Bishop probably gets plugged into the d-line being a JUCO guy.

-Mike Cotton should play.

-Charlie Miller probably gets in there even though we're super deep at wideout. He could help with returns. How about Tommylee and Charlie as a kickoff return tandem?

-A running back could play since we're kind of doing it by committee there until someone steps up.

Who else?

Center and RB are the biggest question for me. At RB we NEED one or two guys to step up HUGE to take the pressure off of Lynch (or McIntosh). It would also be best if Settle (more likely) or Daniels (less likely) were able to take a RS.

Other than that I want the best overall players to play. I am extremely excited for this season.

In the DC chat last night Ryan Wood was really singing the praises of Sebastiano. With Moore and Ashford cemented as the starters, and with Brown, Sebastiano, etc. waiting in the wings...I think Miller needs to be an all-world beater to get significant field time. I have to believe with only one year of playing organized football, a redshirt year would do him wonders.

+1

He needs to learn all he can this year and he will be better than Moore.

Last year at WR we were 9 deep. We lost 2 and #9 (Sabastiano) didn't play. If Miller is one of the top 5 guys (tallent + football smarts) then play him but if not then there is no point.

All the talent in the world doesn't do much if he doesn't understand situational plays.

I think Maxwell may play early. He hasn't played for long and can benefit from redshirting and developing, but man he looks physically gifted.

I bet he sees action.

Can I get an AMEN!

I've been chomping at the bit, waiting for this kid to hit the field.

He's going to be a record-setter.

We asked DD about Miller last night at the Convo. He said, physically, Miller is good enough to play this year. It all depends on how fast he learns the system.

DD is VERY excited about Miller. The three of us that talked to DD came away thinking that he'll be on the field this fall.

RE: Which freshmen will play this fall?
We're at least six deep with guys who can play well, and at least two elite players in Ashford and Moore.. it'd be really hard for Miller to see the field, no matter how good he is. If we see him play this year it means we had devastating injuries or he's the most talented recruit we've had since Michael Turner.

When you go through the roster to see where the young guys fit in, you see just how young that defense was, going to be fun to watch. Went through some growing up the first half of this season, but the next few years they could be outstanding if they reach their potential.

At RB I'd like to see Settle / Womble split carries, and use Daniels all over the field. He's a unique talent, we should be able to get him the ball if its at rb or wr. Keith Harris put up some ridiculous stats but like to see a guy his size red shirt, Perez has the size but not sure at this point he brings anything to the table Womble can't do.

For my guess, I'd say at least one DB gets on the field, since they can also help on special teams, at least one OL (all look good based on what I've read), Cotton although probably not as a starter if our two big guns come back 100%, Perez Ford might take a job just looks tough to keep off the field, I assume Bishop since he's a juco kid.

TL/DR. Gavin or Ivory, two OL (Steger, Brown), Cotton, Ford & Bishop

Miller will be interesting to watch in Summer/Fall. DD thinks he has a ton of talent. Will know quickly when he starts to practice. If he had been playing football for years, might have been a 4 star recruit going to one of the Floridas. Time will tell.

It has always been my understanding that if you have to play a True Frosh at O-Line...you will be in for a long year...O-Line is generally a position where a year of conditioning, weight training, etc is almost a necessity.. Using that logic, I hope we do not see any of the O-Line recruits hit the field this year.

Coach Carey didn't seem to be in a hurry with any of the freshmen, basically echoing what you said. That said, he was very excited about this bunch, very excited about how lean and athletic they were as a group, despite the size. We agreed that you could put 45 lbs on Levon Myers and you wouldn't even notice it. He's going to be monstrous in two years.

DD referred to Myers as the Left Tackle of the future. Scottie Taylor at G or C. So, I think the staff feels that Myers has the highest ceiling of the group if they project him at LT.

They will all probably redshirt.

I like my OL barbecued. Develop them low and slow.

When they're upperclassmen and have spent a redshirt year plus 2 more developing you get nice players.

If a kid has talent and ability and is the best player, put him on the field. The Cream rises to the top.

I am more curious how LAST years redshirts have developed...those on the O line and the D backs...not many LB's left that we havent seen (just have to see how they recover if they come back 100%)

It's not so much is he as good as what we already have, it's more a question of will that player be better as a fifth year senior than he is as an 18 year-old.

The answer's almost always "yes".

Let's remember all of the goofs who wanted Novak to pull the redshirts off of Harnish and Grady in 2007 to "find out what they've got". I think we can all agree that a 22 year-old Harnish was superior to the guy we expected to see as a true freshman, even if he would have been better than Ryan Morris and might have helped us win another game or two back then.

I almost forgot the Ryan Morris experiment.

If ever there was a "program soldier", it was Ryan Morris. In 20 years, when you want to prove your fandom, it'll be his name that you drop, as in:

"I saw Ryan Morris take the field against Ball State in Coach Novak's last game when we were 2-9, and he bulldogged his way to a 10th loss so Jerry Kill could always claim he resurrected the program, goddammit."

Of course, don't tell that story when it is Jerry Kill you're talking to at the Brigham golf outing... it'll look bad.
