I follow ACA specs on building boards complete with sanding and using poly. Now at the person's request I'll build with 1x4 instead of 2.4 for the frame, simply to cut down on the weight of the boards. They're just as sturdy either way. The only issue I have right now is I either need a new jigsaw or they make this circular drill bit job that's the form of a saw. I've worn mine out. They're really not hard to make and are actually kind of fun. 12 pack of beer, power tools and a radio makes for a fun day if you can't play golf or go fish.
I'm not pimping anything for GOLD.
As for students/younger people playing tennis for fun, I think some still do but it's a sport that seems to have lost touch with the average person. Kind of a shame actually. I was never very good at it but we still had fun trying.

are they of any quality or are you just pimping for GOLD to help him make a few extra bucks around christmas? if he has anything to do with them they are probably pretty shabby....
