Mercer 63, Kennesaw 66 ---FINAL
It's no longer necessary to give a remaining ASUN game the title of "huge game" or "must win". These tags are understood by all involved.

Kennesaw (11-12, 6-6) enters the game 7th in the ASUN standings. No longer are they on the bubble of #8. North Florida currently holds that honor.

Mercer (11-11, 7-5) is in a 3-way tie for 4th in the ASUN standings, however, MU holds wins over the teams they are tied with.

Kennesaw got the best of Mercer when the teams met in Macon. Since then Mercer has ripped off two convincing wins. It should be noted though that Kennesaw has blown through opponents and is on a 5 game win streak. The implications are obvious -- MU wins and they continue to climb back up the ladder; Kennesaw wins and all of a sudden the Georgia teams are tied, and moving in different directions.

If this game were handicapped, Mercer would no doubt be a favorite. Take into account Kennesaw's hot streak and the fact that it's on their home floor... then Mercer is a favorite by the slimmest of margins (on paper). Kennesaw is a young team, Mercer is not. That's the difference in my opinion.

I don't understand how you could say this considering the past 2 weeks of basketball. I think the game would be a pickem. You have more experience, but our winning streak plus the fact that we just beat you at your place would help us. I think either team could win this game. It should be a great game.

I hope we can contain him like we did last time. I think that your team will be better prepared for our zone this time. Florence made a lot of mistakes last time.

That full court pressure kennesaw used was the whole game. It just destroyed us forcing bad decisions.... U know ksu is bringing that out tonight

Yeah, we have gotten a lot better with our press in the last 2 weeks. I think when we played Campbell it really opened our coach's eyes to what the constant pressure can do to a team. We tried it out in our next game, and our players really responded. Hopefully it will work great tonight!

Mercer down 4 at the half.

They started off great... Kusnyer is killing them, which happens sometimes. The two guys off the bench Pikanikas (spelling??) and o'shaugnessy (spelling??) just don't belong. Maybe someday, but right now they are fish out of water and that's the difference right now.

These KSU announcers are growing on my nerves. It's as if I'm next to a drunk fan that's just badgering everyone. The last play I have no idea what happened except that they wanted an intentional foul called!? On who? What's the score??

Oh and listening to how Florence pushed off for 30 seconds was fun!

Great game, gonna be a good finish. I want my announcer back.

Oh yea and Kennesaw is DESTROYING Mercer on the boards. It's a lot of long rebounds on terrible shots, but still. 21 offensive rebounds SO FAR for KSU, and they only lead by 2. Do the math!

Kusnyer doesn't have it, I'm convinced. This was a season defining game and the big players showed up (all the starters but him). I would like to see Hall in the lineup, Kusnyer off the bench with Moore. Moore is looking fantastic. I'd also like to see more of Brendan Walker. He's actually a good player. Pikanikus and oshaugnessy just aren't d1 talent and you can say they cost us the game, especially pikanikus.

I officially hate Kennesaw even more. I can't stand the announcers or the coach. I'm glad you guys had such a nice crowd and I'm also really happy Mercer traveled their cheerleaders, mascot, and the big brick. Hope they do that every year. Congrats on the win and passing Mercer in the standings. Kennesaw wanted it more.

MercerFan,
I am perennially perplexed by your squad. KSU is an up-and-coming squad, so there's no shame in losing to them, but it seems as though the Bears are heading down the path to underachievement again this year. While there's still plenty of basketball left, it appears that you're imploding. You guys were one of my picks to go far this year, as you were last year. What gives? Is Florence a cancer?

Just wanted to say thanks for being cordial MercerFan. Hard for me to believe that we swept Mercer this year...especially after our 1-6 start. This was probably the defining win thus far in Division I for the Owls. Great crowd at both universities. I really think we have the potential to develop a great rivalry. The game was definitely very chippy tonight, but no one got out of control. I will be glad to see Emerson and Florence graduate...they are very very good basketball players.

Hey I know you all would do the same. It was the type of game you love to watch and be a part of the crowd. It's what I hope our teams can develop. I hope those 100 or so fans that made the trip have such a bad taste in their mouth. I hope right now they are thinking about nothing but hatred. Asking how can this new team be beating us? How did they in fact call their shot with printed shirts and signs? There's nothing to like about them. Let's market this, go with it, and next time they are in Macon we need our own designed t-shirt. Possibly a bear eating an Owl.... haha.

Anyways... Away from the win/loss result of this game there were a lot of positives for Mercer... much less than KSU... but I was impressed with the numbers that traveled there.

Look in life there's winners and losers in sports. We are the losers. If the players who caused this loss read the criticism and feel mad... well they should. They had a moment in time to be great and they were not. You also have 7 more games and a conference tournament. If players or anyone official reads this, there's plenty of time left to be the best. It's not time for the coach to make friends on the team. Go with the best lineup possible. Kusnyer can still be a weapon, but let's face it... if he doesn't make shots he's not rebounding or playing strong D. It becomes a serious liability and it's not fair to the other players. He only needs limited bench minutes and can still get his shots -- which is honestly all he wants, I see it every game. I believe Kusnyer wants to win, but the coach has the job to put him in position to succeed. Kusnyer can get 10 shots in 20 minutes easily. Or 6 to 7 better shots in 15 minutes, not forcing anything. 4-6 is so much better than 6-17. Hall and Walker can add the needed depth. We can do it, but not with that team I just saw. I'm still unsure of what I just saw.

The fans are behind the team no matter what the coach decides... but when somethings broke (11-12) you gotta fix it.

RE: Mercer 63, Kennesaw 66 ---FINAL
I looked at the stats on the year to make sure I was giving Kusnyer a fair assessment. I may have been a little too harsh, his numbers aren't bad overall, but they aren't at a championship level either. It may be tough to swallow, but I stand by my idea that he's a player better suited to come off the bench. I mean really, he's in there to shoot and that's it. Bring him in every now and then -- fresh, full of energy -- and give him a couple shots, then back to the bench and repeat later. He can come in for 5 minutes and take anywhere from 0 shots up to 3 or 4 if hot. but nothing forced. I'm just tired of seeing him have to dribble around, trying to drive...end up traveling or just losing it and turning it over. He's running all over and losing energy and it's just not his game.

If it's too emotional then start him still but pull him at the first media break and then strategically place him throughout the rest of the game.

Buc, I'm perplexed too. This seems to be a yearly event regardless of the coach. Our team is too senior -laden and talented to be in the bottom half of the league standings right now. I'm very disappointed. I went to the game last night, and KSU just wanted it more. Mercer got out hustled (rebounds - especially on the offensive side, loose balls, etc.). I don't know if Florence is a cancer or not. KSU really keyed on him last night, but other than some good play by Emerson and Smith, no one else really stepped up. I just don't get it.

MercerFan, I'm beginning to dislike KSU the way I hated Georgia State back in the day. It could develop into a good rivalry. Some KSU student in the parking lot asked where Mercer was. I guess he didn't warrant a letter from Mercer when he was in high school. If you can't go to college, go to State!!

Toby, that last line was harsh! I'm still totally confused on how the team is 7-6. The league leader is only 9-4! It's awful when you add that to the mix. There's so many teams with 9 and 8 wins, it's gonna be near impossible for Mercer to get to 1st place. It would take winning all 7 remaining games. Gotta just aim for the best seed possible I suppose. There's honestly no team to be 'scared' of though. I'd say Belmont is least desirable first round match.

p.s. - Mercer has the tourney for the next 2 years, correct?

That was our old cheer for Ga State. It used to piss off all those near illiterate juco transfers Lefty always brought in and all their commuter school fans. Might as well recycle it if this is now a rivalry. If the shoe fits...

Yep, we're out of the running for a top two seed. Just have to hope for a hot streak to hit the first week of March. We host the tournament next year too, but next year looks like a rebuilding year for us.

I've been thinking next year was a rebuilding year for the longest time, but maybe it won't be. If Hoffman can snag a couple JUCO's that have the same talent level as Jeff Smith & Brandon Moore then we're in business. Plus if BJ Corley comes back (I hope, I don't know his status) then the team is looking solid. Mills, Corley, Moore, Smith, Hall as the starting lineup. Add in JUCO's and we're in business.
